Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) posted the second highest total in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) en route to their crushing 56 runs win over Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Friday, April 28. Batting first after losing the toss at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali, Lucknow put up a massive 257/5 on the board. Their bowlers then restricted Punjab to 201 in 19.5 overs.

Batting first, Lucknow lost skipper KL Rahul to Kagiso Rabada for 12 off 9 balls as he punched a ball away from the body. However, Marcus Stoinis top-scored with 72 off 40, while Kyle Mayers (54 off 24), Ayush Badoni ( 43 off 24) and Nicholas Pooran (45 off 19) combined to lift LSG to an imposing score.

In a tremendous exhibition of clean hitting, Stoinis struck six fours and five sixes. Openers Mayers’ half-century included seven fours and four sixes. Badoni’s knock featured three fours and as many sixes, while Pooran clubbed seven fours and one maximum.

Stoinis and Badoni added 89 for the third wicket to put LSG in command of the game. The duo of Stoinis and Pooran then took the game ahead, adding 76 for the fourth wicket. Stoinis fell in the penultimate over to Sam Curran, while Arshdeep Singh trapped Pooran lbw. However, it was too late to make a difference.

In the chase of 258, PBKS lost skipper Shikhar Dhawan for 1 as he upper cut Stoinis straight to deep point. Prabhsimran Singh was out for 9 off 13 to Naveen-ul-Haq. Atharva Taide (66 off 36) and Sikandar Raza (36 off 22) added 78 for the third wicket to steady Punjab. Taide hit eight fours and two sixes in his impressive knock. For Lucknow, Yash Thakur claimed 4/37 and Naveen-ul-Haq 3/30.

Speaking after winning the match, LSG skipper KL Rahul said, “It is so against the T20 trend. Can’t put a finger on it. Happy that we got the win. Every game from now on would be very important. We had a break after the last game. We came back fresher after that. We were clear as to how to bat. When you see such wickets, you get excited as batters. Getting 250 speaks highly of how we batted.

Elaborating on the batting performance, he added, “Just being familiar to wickets helps. We always talk about setting the tone at the start. We had guys like Mayers, Stoinis. Badoni has been batting well. Hooda as well. The think tank does most of the thinking and I try to understand what they are thinking.”
