BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has decided to replace Virat Kohli as the captain of ODI and make Rohit Sharma the leader of the day trip. Ganguly revealed that BCCI had asked Corley not to resign as the T20 captain. However, once he does this, there is no need to set up two separate captains for these two restricted game formats

On Wednesday, BCCI announced that Rohit will become the captain of the ODI team. The 34-year-old player was appointed as the T20 captain after Corley resigned from his leadership position at the end of the T20 World Cup. However, Kohli is keen to continue serving as ODI and test team leader. Although BCCI retained Kohli as the leader of the test match, Rohit won the position of captain of the white team.

In an interview with PTI, Ganguly confirmed that BCCI and Kohli had discussed his decision to resign as T20 leader. The BCCI boss said: “We asked Villat not to resign as the T20 captain, but he does not want to continue as captain. Therefore, the selectors believe that they cannot have two white team captains in the two white ball formats. This is too much.”

Ganguly explained that if India decides to go with two independent white team captains, there will be too much confusion in the leadership. He added: “I don’t know (about the chaos), but this is how they (the selectors) feel. This is how to come to this conclusion-let Rohit be the white team captain and Villat be the red team long.”

The captain is no stranger to Rohit. He is a legend in IPL and has led the Mumbai Indians (MI) to a record of five championships. In the few games he led the Indian team, he also left a deep impression. When asked about his expectations of Rohit as the captain of India, Ganguly said: “It’s hard to predict. I wish him all the best and hope that he will do well.”

“If you look at Rohit’s record in any of the ODIs he captained for India, it is very good. After all, there can be no two white team captains. I can’t explain all the discussions and what the selector said. But this is the main reason why Rohit was accepted as the captain of the white team.”

Ganguli confirmed that he and the chairman of the selection committee, Chetan Sharma, had talked with Kohli on the matter.
