The second-round Elite Group A match between Maharashtra and Jharkhand in Pune faced an unexpected delay due to a tornado damaging the sightscreen. The incident occurred during the innings break when Jharkhand had completed their first innings and were preparing to take the field for the bowling session.
The sightscreen, located at the Hill End, collapsed, causing a significant delay in the resumption of play. Officials from the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MACA) worked swiftly to repair the damage, pausing the match for nearly half an hour. Players had to endure an extended break before normalcy was restored.
The unexpected interruption occurred around 1 pm on Saturday afternoon during the second session of the second day. According to MACA officials, the heavy rains that had battered the city a couple of days earlier had damaged the frame of the sight screen, leading to its collapse. The intensity of the rains had been such that the teams couldn’t practice before the match.
An MACA official explained that little could be done against the forces of nature. “When a tornado of such magnitude hits the ground, we could not have prevented the damage. The sightscreen was partially damaged, but we managed to rectify it without significant delay,” stated the official.
Ajinkya Joshi, the COO of MACA, confirmed the impact of the cyclonic winds, saying, “Due to cyclonic winds, the sightscreen collapsed, but we managed to fix it in 15 minutes.”
The incident occurred just after Jharkhand had been dismissed for 403. In response to this competitive total, the home team had reached 149 for one at stumps on the second day.
The Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Gahunje, on the outskirts of Pune, has hosted various international and domestic matches, including Tests, T20Is, ODIs, and IPL games. Despite the temporary interruption caused by the sightscreen collapse, the match continued after the repairs, highlighting the resilience of the ground staff and officials in managing unexpected challenges during cricket matches.
