Shikhar Dhawan battles a lone hand to help Punjab put 143 runs on the board; remains 99*

Shikhar Dhawan, the captain of the Punjab Kingsplayed one of the best innings of the year on Sunday, battling alone to score 99 as Punjab reached 143/9 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Every other PBKS batter, except Dhawan and Sam Curran (both 22), failed to reach double digits as the SRH spinners destroyed them, with Mayank Markande getting 4 wickets and Umran Malik and Marco Jansen each claiming 2.

Punjab Kings skipper Shikhar Dhawan led a lone battle with the bat against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. He remained unbeaten on 99 in just 66 balls. The Punjab Kings were tottering at 78-8 with Dhawan on 37 in 30 balls. At that time, it hardly felt that Punjab could cross 100 runs.

But Shikhar Dhawan upped the ante and gave Punjab bowlers something to bowl at. He was dropped by Shikhar Dhawan in the 17th over and made the most of the opportunity.

The most satisfying part of the knock was that he was flawless in the innings and negotiated the new ball comfortably. Bhuvaneshwar and Marco Jansen made the new ball talk as the batters had no clue which way the ball was swinging. Later, the Punjab batters fell to the spin bowling masterclass by Mayank Markande. However, Shikhar Dhawan was hardly troubled by any Hyderabad bowler.

The knock came against his former team and the Hyderabad crowd acknowledged his innings. Punjab ended with 143 runs with 99 alone by the skipper. It is still a tough job for the bowlers, but Shikhar has given them something to bowl at. This knock was worth more than a hundred.

Shikhar Dhawan speaks after getting the orange cap

I am glad that the Hyderabad crowd still remembers me. I have played a few ones, this was one of the best maybe. It is good because I played till the end and the wickets were falling from the other end. So, we have got to a respectable total and given ourselves a chance.
