Virat Kohli is no longer India captain but the spotlight simply cannot avoid him as the former captain was heavily criticised on social media for chewing gum during the national anthem ahead of Cape Town’s third ODI.
After losing their first two ODIs, India made a series of changes to their XI in Cape Town’s third game – Suryakumar Yadav, Jayant Yadav, Prasidh Krishna and Deepak Chahar replaced Venkatesh Iyer, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shardul Thakur.
The first was bowling, with India limiting South Africa to 287 in 50 overs, but the trending video on social media happened before the match. During the national anthem where the teams were lined up, the camera panned over the Indian players and showed Kohli chewing gum during the anthem.
The video, which went viral on social media, drew a swipe from the former Indian captain, with the caption “Ambassador of the Nation” in an apparent mockery of Kohli’s actions.
