Shakib Al Hasan retracts appeal after non-striker run-out controversy in BAN v AFG game

In a bizarre incident during the second ODI between Bangladesh and Afghanistan (BAN v AFG), Shakib Al Hasan retracted an appeal after the umpire deemed the Afghanistan batter run out. The incident happened in the 17th over of Afghanistan’s run chase after Bangladesh had set a daunting target of 307 on board.

WHY DID SHAKIB AL HASAN RETRACT THE APPEAL?

Afghanistan had lost three wickets for 34 runs and Rahmat Shah and Najibullah Zadran were building a solid partnership. Off the second ball of the over, Najibullah drove one straight back at Shakib and the ball burst through Shakib’s fingers for four. But the same thing repeated itself next ball and this time the ball went through Shakib’s hands and clattered onto the stumps at the non-striker’s end with Rahmat Shah out of his crease.

Shakib seemed unsure if he had touched the ball before it hit the stumps. The third umpire played out multiple replays before deciding that the ball had touched Shakib’s hand and Rahmat Shah was out.

But Shakib, in a terrific gesture, repeated that he had made no contact with the ball and that Rahmat wasn’t run out. Bangladesh retracted the appeal much to everybody’s surprise in a very sporting gesture and the Afghanistan batter was saved.

WHAT HAPPENED IN THE BAN v AFG GAME?

Fans appeared to love the gesture from Bangladesh and Shakib and it earned praise on social media with fans taken by surprise at Shakib’s kind gesture.

Shakib has been in the news of late for all the wrong reasons with him smashing the stumps multiple times during a domestic game garnering major attention on social media last year.

In the Bangladesh Premier League this year, he won five successive Player of the Match awards and is in the form of his life. He was dismissed for 20 in this game with the bat, but Bangladesh posted 306 on board thanks to a hundred from Liton Das and fifty from Mushfiqur Rahim.
