MS Dhoni’s long maintained secrecy is well-known in Indian cricket. The legendary former India captain is remembered for keeping himself secluded from the outside noise and chatter around him and his work. So much so that at times even his closest teammates and even the BCCI administrators couldn’t reach him.
It wasn’t egoistic on Dhoni’s part but just a carefully planned routine, which allowed him to keep the praise and the criticism at bay and keep himself focused solely on maintaining a perfect life balance on and off the field.
But one of MS Dhoni’s former teammates, Virender Sehwag, revealed this habit got to the extreme levels at one stage, where the BCCI had to hand the then India captain a “special phone” so that he doesn’t avert their calls.

“When the secretary next time met him, he gave a special phone to MS Dhoni” – Sehwag
MS Dhoni led India to three major ICC titles and the No.1 tag in ICC Test rankings
Sehwag, in a conversation on Cricbuzz last year, recollected how the BCCI secretary of the time had to give MS Dhoni a different phone, the number of which was only known to the board and the skipper, so that the selectors and officials could get in contact with him.
“Once it happened that the BCCI secretary (name not revealed) called MS and he didn’t pick up the call. When the secretary next time met him, he gave a special phone to MS and told him that when this one rings, you need to pick it up,” Sehwag said.
“Because there would be board meetings (selection) and as a captain, he was required to attend those calls. From that time, MS had that phone provided by BCCI and I don’t know whether it’s still there,” he added. ” But yes, he has a personal number.”
MS Dhoni’s habit of averting calls was also revealed by the great VVS Laxman in his post-retirement media interaction back in 2012.
