The Cricket Control Council of India (BCCI) appointed Rohit Sharma as the new captain of the Indian ODI team on Wednesday to replace Virat Kohli. After Kohli stepped down after the 2021 T20 World Cup, Rohit was earlier appointed as the leader of the T20I team. Kohli is keen to continue as the captain of the day trip and test. However, although the selector retained him as the test leader, he was cancelled as the captain of the day.

A BCCI statement stated that “The All India Senior Selection Committee also decided to appoint Mr. Rohit Sharma as the captain of the future ODI and T20I teams.” Kohli succeeded MS Dhoni as the leader in 2017. He was the blue captain in 95 ODI games, 65 wins and 27 losses. One match was tied, but two matches were inconclusive. Kohli ended his tenure as ODI captain with a winning percentage of 70.43. Under his leadership, India lost to Pakistan in the 2017 Champions Cup final and lost to New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup semi-finals.

In addition to being appointed as the captain of the one-day team, Rohit was also appointed as the deputy captain of the test team to participate in the three-game series against South Africa. Rohit replaced Ajinkya Rahane, who retained the team’s position as a batsman

Test team of the Indian team: Virat Kohli (captain), Rohit Sharma (deputy captain), KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (week), Wriddhiman Saha (week), R Ashwin, Jayant Yad Isan Te Sharma, Mohd. Shami, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur, Silaj, Maryland

Speaking of the difficult journey in South Africa, the former Indian batsman VVS Laxman said that if the tourists want to win the series, the Indian batsmen need to fire. When talking about Star Sports, Laxman observed:

“It’s very important not to repeat the same mistakes. If you see the way Ajinkya Rahane went out in Kanpur, Pujara went out in Kanpur and left in Mumbai, it’s almost like a pattern in development. Even Shubmanjir is settling in. After coming down, he also threw away his wicket. So, I just believe that this is the beginning of turning this into a big score, which is very critical.”

India will conduct three ODI and three tests during their South Africa Tour, starting with the Boxing Day test on December 26
