Due to a hamstring injury, experienced Indian team batsman Rohit Sharma was excluded from the three test series in South Africa. Rohit was earlier appointed as the deputy captain of the test series, which will begin with a Boxing Day test at the SuperSport Park in Centurion.
Rohit was injured during training in Mumbai on Sunday as part of preparations for the South African test. Priyank Panchal (Priyank Panchal) recently served as the captain of the Indian A team tour during the Rainbow Nation, he joined the test team as a substitute for Rohit. However, the selector did not appoint a new test deputy captain to replace Rohit, who replaced Ajinkya Rahane.
BCCI’s official news stated that “India’s test deputy captain Rohit Sharma suffered a left hamstring injury during training in Mumbai yesterday. He was excluded from the upcoming 3-match test series against South Africa.”
Whether Rohit can participate in the three ODI series held in South Africa on January 19 is still unclear. When the team for the test series was announced earlier this month, the 34-year-old was appointed as one-day captain, replacing Virat Kohli.
Rohit’s substitute Panchal represented Gujarat in domestic cricket matches. He scored 96 points in Bloemfontein in the recent unofficial test series held by India A in South Africa. Panchal has an impressive record in domestic cricket matches in India. In 100 first-class games, he scored 7,011 points with an average of 45.52, 24 100s and 25 50s.
The Indian Tour South Africa team will undergo a three-day quarantine at a five-star hotel in Mumbai, and then depart for South Africa on December 16 to participate in the test series.
