Mumbai Indians’ first game of the season against the Royal Challengers Bangalore is a special occasion for MI’s captain Rohit Sharma. As Rohit Sharma took the field against RCB today, he joined an elite club. Only a handful of players have achieved what Rohit did today .

earlier, Royal Challengers Bangalore‘s captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and invited Mumbai Indians to bat first in Bengaluru. RCB are entering this game without three of their star players; Josh Hazlewood, Rajat Patidar, and Wanindu Hasaranga. On the other hand, MI are playing the season without the star speedster Jasprit Bumrah.

Rohit Sharma’s special feat

Rohit Sharmathe prolific Indian opener and captain, made history by becoming the second Indian and third overall captain to lead his team in 200 T20 matches. Sharma achieved this feat during the opening match of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) season between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Bengaluru.

MS Dhoni, former Indian captain, and T20 World Cup-winning skipper leads the elite list with 307 captaincy appearances, while Sharma’s close competitor, Darren Sammy, is in the second spot, having led his team 208 times in T20 cricket.

Sharma’s captaincy journey began in 2013 when he was appointed as the captain of Mumbai Indians. Since then, he has emerged as the most successful captain in the IPL, with five titles to his name. He has also captained India 51 times in the T20 format and has led Mumbai Indians 149 times in the IPL and Champions League T20.

Indian dominance

The dominance of Indian cricket in the T20 format is evident from the fact that four out of the top five players in the list of most matches as captains in T20s are Indian cricketers. Along with Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni, the list also features current India captain Virat Kohli and former India opener Gautam Gambhir.
