As most will know, injuries in cricket are not uncommon. However, it saddened many fans to learn that recently, a serious injury happened outside of the grounds as former wicketkeeper Rod Marsh suffered a heart attack. While the 74-year-old Australian legend is still alive, it has been reported that he is in a critical condition in hospital. However, fans should be assured that Marsh is being well-looked after at Bundaberg hospital as he has some of his former teammates surrounding him.

It has been reported that the heart attack happened when travelling to a charity cricket match in Queensland. Also in the car was Bulls Masters officials John Glanville and David Hillier. It turns out that their presence saved their life according to Jimmy Maher, boss of the Bull Masters as he said, “John and Dave deserve so much credit because the doctor said if they had waited for an ambulance he would not have made it”. According to News Corp, Marsh’s life was saved by doctors upon arriving at the hospital, where his heart stopped beating for several minutes. As already stated, while still alive, doctors must now decide whether to keep Marsh in Bundaberg for an operation or to send him to Brisbane instead.

The Australian Cricketers’ Association also commented on the situation, saying “The thoughts of everyone within cricket are with the family and many friends of Rod Marsh, who is in a critical condition in hospital after suffering a heart attack this morning. The statement also said , “Rod is an influential figure in Australian cricket and has been so for more than 50 years”. Looking at his career thus far, it is hard to disagree with this notion too. Many will remember Marsh for his performances in Australia’s cricket team where he made 96 Test appearances for his country. At the time of his retirement, he also broke the record for dismissals which totalled 355. However, this record has since been surpassed.

Given this history, there is no doubt that Rod Marsh is something of an icon in Australia. In addition to his Test match appearances, Marsh also made 92 appearances in white-ball cricket over a career that spanned from 1970 to 1984. Despite retiring, Marsh continued to enjoy several roles within the sport, and some Britons might know of him for his role as England selector from 2003 to 2005.

Australian cricket fans and even cricket fans around the world will be hoping and praying for Rod Marsh during this time, as well as for his friends and family that surround him.
