Shastri, who was India’s head coach from 2017 to 2021, suggested that external factors may also have played a role in Kohli’s resignation as captain. Shastri made the same point in a conversation with the former Pakistani racer Shoib Akhtar on the latter’s YouTube channel.

“Virat realised it was too much for him, captaining the team in all three forms in the Covid era. He couldn’t even rest. He stepped back from white-ball cricket and did the right thing,” he said.
Even though Shastri backed Virat to drop the ODI and T20I captaincy positions, the veteran was taken aback by his decision to step down as Test captain.
“I’m a little surprised when it comes to Test cricket. We are the No. 1 Test team for the past five years and it’s confusing to me to give up captain just because of a series loss. But at the end of the day, I always respect cricket Athlete’s judgment,” Shastri added.
Kohli happens to be India’s most successful Test captain after surpassing the dhoni’s record at the 2019 Tour of the West Indies.Under Kohli, India has also reached the final of the 2019-21 World Test Championship (WTC) final against new Zealand Back to June 2021.
