Former India head coach Ravi Shastri showered accolades on Virat Kohli, praising him for his significant impact on Test cricket. During the ongoing Australia vs. Pakistan Test series, Shastri, currently involved in commentary duties, expressed his admiration for Kohli’s work ethic and passion for the game.
“Hats off to Virat for his work ethic, passion for the game, and the desire to perform against the best. No one trains or works harder than him,” Shastri remarked during the first Test. He highlighted Kohli’s exceptional performances, especially in Australia, where the challenging competition brings out the best in him.
“He loves batting in Australia; he loves the way the Australians compete. Some of his best batting I saw was against Australia. The 100 he scored in Perth was on a dodgy pitch where people were getting hit,” Shastri added, emphasizing Kohli’s prowess in demanding conditions.
In addition to praising Kohli’s individual achievements, Shastri acknowledged the captain’s role in transforming India’s Test cricket. Under Kohli’s leadership, India played fearlessly and clinched their first-ever Test series win Down Under in 2019-20.
“He is one of the modern-day greats, and he has kept Test cricket going. There are very few ambassadors like Virat Kohli. He brings energy on the field as a captain and as a player. Look at his eyes; he means business,” Shastri commended, highlighting Kohli’s impact on the format.
Expressing his desire for Kohli to continue playing, Shastri stated, “The desire is still there, and I want him to play for three more years because the world cricket wants him. There is a personality, a character.”
Shastri’s words capture the essence of Kohli’s influence on Test cricket, not just as a stellar batsman but also as a leader who redefined India’s approach to the format.
