Published on: Oct 13, 2022
Thailand scripts history, but thanks to the bad weather. The women’s cricket team has advanced to the semi-finals of the Asia Cup, for the first time since 2012 when it debuted in the event. It is ranked fourth in the points table. The top in the list is India with 10 points and 3.141 NRR followed by Pakistan with 10 points and 1.806 NRR. Sri Lanka is placed third with 8 points. Bangladesh, UAE and Malaysia have been eliminated in the league phase.
Thailand will face India in the first semi while Pakistan will combat Sri Lanka in the second. Both semi-finals are scheduled to be held on October 13 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet, Bangladesh.
India has won five of six matches in the league phase and the same goes for Pakistan. Sri Lanka lost two matches of six played while Thailand lost three and won three. The chance of arch-rivals India and Pakistan reaching the final is high considering the points table and performances of players so far. The final will be held on October 15.
This is the 8th edition of the Women’s Asia Cup which was first organized in 2004 in Sri Lanka. India has won the title six times while Bangladesh has claimed it once. Pakistan and Sri Lanka are yet to taste the victory of the tournament. Sri Lanka was the runner-up four times while Pakistan twice.
Defending champions and host Bangladesh was to face UAE Tuesday morning, but the match was abandoned due to bad weather. No toss was conducted and no play was possible. The team required two points to finish fourth in the points table, but the rain washed away their one point. Both teams were given one point each.
Playing six games in the league, Bangladesh managed to win just two while Thailand won three by defeating Pakistan, Malaysia and UAE. The opening batters, Nannapat Koncharoenkai and Natthakan Chantham, were the best performers along with captain Naruemol Chaiwai.
Until yesterday, the Bangladesh women were confident to pave the path of playing the semi-final by defeating UAE and defend the title.
Bangladesh lost the last match against Sri Lanka on October 10 in a rain-shortened match. The players failed to score 41 in 7 overs. Sri Lanka was invited to bat first and scored 83 runs in 18.1 overs with the loss of five wickets. Rain interrupted the match and Bangladesh was reduced to play just seven overs. The team pocketed 37 with the loss of 7 wickets. The team fell short of 3 runs to gain two points.
The fall of wickets was 1-4 (Murshida Khatun, 1.2 ov), 2-12 (Fargana Hoque, 2.3 ov), 3-27 (Rumana Ahmed, 5.1 ov), 4-28 (Nigar Sultana, 5.3 ov), 5 -29 (Sobhana Mostary, 5.5 ov), 6-30 (Fahima Khatun, 5.6 ov), 7-35 (Salma Khatun, 6.5 ov).
This is the first time Bangladesh has finished outside of top four in the Women’s Asia Cup.
