After being selected for the Indian test team for the World Test Championship (WTC) finals match against Australia at the Oval beginning June 7, Ajinkya Rahane sent a touching and motivational message on his LinkedIn page.

Rahane, one of India’s most talented Test batsmen, was sacked from the Indian test team following his disappointing showing during the team’s tour of South Africa in 2022. In 15 matches between 2021 and 2022, Ajinkya averaged a pitiful 20 desp it having a test average overall of 38.52.

In 2022–2023, the 34-year-old had a standout Ranji season, amassing 634 runs at a remarkable average of 57.6, which earned him a comeback to the Indian test squad.

Rahane published a touching message on his journey and the importance of putting the focus on the process above the outcome on the day that he was chosen for the team to face Australia.

Rahane said

“In my career as a professional cricketer, I have realized that the journey is not always smooth sailing. There are moments when things don’t go as planned, and it becomes tempting to get bogged down by the result. However, I have learned that it is essential to stick to the process and not let the outcome affect our focus,” Rahane penned.

“As I look back on my career, I realize that the moments when I stuck to the process, despite the unfavorable result, were the ones that taught me the most. These are the moments that helped me grow as a person and as a cricketer . I realized that the times when I let the result dictate my approach were not my finest moments”, Rahane continued.

“Sticking to the process is not only essential in cricket but in any field that demands excellence. It helps us focus on the things that we can control and take ownership of our actions. When we focus on the process, we don’t get overwhelmed by the outcome, and it keeps us motivated to keep working towards our goals.”

Ajinkya has been in outstanding form for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL, hitting 209 runs with a strike rate of 199.52 and an average of 52.25.

The choice of the seasoned and effective Rahane for one of the most intense test matches seems justified given the injuries to middle-order batsmen Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant as well as Suryakumar Yadav‘s dismal record.
