India’s premier off-spinner R Ashwin received flak over social media and had to issue a clarification after deleting his initial tweet in response to a misinterpreted headline and attempt to troll by a lifeless anonymous account.
The incident came to light on Friday (March 11) afternoon – the eve of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Bangalore – when Ashwin’s remarks made for former India batter WV Raman’s contribution in his journey were misunderstood by the ex Tamil Nadu veteran and coach on Twitter.
A misleading headline on a Hindustan Times piece highlighted the word “hard taskmaster”to which Raman reacted with an “Oops” on his official Twitter handle. Inside, however, it was clear that the word was taken from R Ashwin’s narration of Raman’s astute coaching style on BCCI.tv, speaking of how he hardened young Tamil Nadu players back in the day.

But even as Raman left his reaction to just a bit of surprise, a troll account going by @IndianHesson tagged Ashwin and accused him of disrespecting Raman and called such behaviour unbecoming of a legendary cricketer.
This tweet caught the eye of Ashwin and the cricketer reacted with a tweet that later got misconstructed as a jibe on state board students.

The moment this tweet came to light, R Ashwin received heavy trolling from certain corners for being disrespectful to state board students.
The cricketer then deleted this tweet and issued a clarification, explaining what he exactly meant and highlighted that he was himself a state board student once.
This headline doesn’t do justice to the content written beneath the heading. Hopefully all of you unlike @IndianHesson will be able to read the entire content.
Also, I was a state board student myself and there was no offence intended.✌️???? https://t.co/6mBvNIZJGC

R Ashwin is in the pink of health with his overall game ahead of the second Test against Sri Lanka. The experienced cricketer produced a critical knock of 61 in the first-innings of the first Test in Mohali and backed that up with six wickets in the match, including a four-fer in the final innings.
Ashwin’s incredible allround feat helped India secure an innings & 222-run victory in the first Test. The 35-year-old will be hoping to continue his rich vein of form into the pink-ball D/N outing in Bangalore, starting Saturday ( March 12).
