R Ashwin fined for indecent remarks against the empires

Rajasthan Royals (RR) suffered two blows in their recent Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as their captain Sanju Samson was fined Rs 12 lakh for slow over-rate, and all-rounder R Ashwin was penalized 25 percent of his match fee for a breach of IPL code of conduct.

Samson’s fine was imposed because RR took more than the allotted time to complete their overs during the match against CSK on April 12. Ravichandran Ashwinon the other hand, was found guilty of violating the IPL’s Code of Conduct after the same match.

Why Ashwin fined?

During a post-match press conference in Chennai, after RR’s successful defense of a 174-run total and his all-round performance that earned him the Player of the Match award, Ashwin criticized the empires’ decision to change the ball due to dew, without consulting the Rajasthan Royals team.

He called for standard rules to be implemented across all IPL matches to ensure fair play, stating that the Rajasthan Royals were not consulted before the ball was changed. Ashwin’s comments were deemed to be in violation of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which prohibits players from criticizing umpiring decisions publicly.

“I’m quite surprised the empires changed the ball for dew on their own. It’s never happened before and I’m quite surprised.”, Ashwin had said at the post-match conference after RR’s win over CSK yesterday.

“Some of the decisions in this year’s IPL on the field have left me a little flummoxed, to be honest. It left me flummoxed in a good or bad way because what you need is a little bit of balance. We’re going as a bowling team and we’re not asking for the ball to be changed. But the ball was changed on the umpire’s accord. What reason – I did ask the umpire but he said we can change it,” he further added.

After this, the veteran off-spinner was booked by the IPL for a breach of the code of conduct. IPL released an official statement saying, “Rajasthan Royals’ Ravichandran Ashwin has been fined 25 Percent of his match-fee for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during Match 17 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on April 12.”
