Prithvi Shaw’s Record-Breaking Double Century in One-Day Cup for Northamptonshire

In a remarkable display of batting prowess, Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw achieved a monumental feat by scoring a double century for Northamptonshire in the ongoing One-Day Cup tournament. The young opener converted his maiden hundred for Northamptonshire into an astonishing 129-ball double century against Somerset on Wednesday.

Having secured his spot as the opener in his third match for Northamptonshire, Shaw first marked his maiden century for the team with a fluent innings off 81 deliveries. Demonstrating his ability to shift gears effortlessly, he accelerated his innings to reach an extraordinary double century.Shaw’s remarkable achievement was underlined by his second century, which he notched up in a mere 129 balls, including an impressive array of 24 boundaries and eight towering sixes.

This scintillating performance highlighted his aggressive batting style and ability to dominate the bowling attack. The Mumbai-born batsman’s previous double century was recorded during the 2020-21 Vijay Hazare Trophy, when he played for Mumbai and scored an unbeaten 227 against Puducherry, setting a record for the highest score in the tournament at that time.Shaw’s performance against Somerset shattered numerous List A records, marking his ninth century in the format and his first since a score of 165 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Mumbai back in March 2021.

Notably, his impressive List A career includes more than 2800 runs, with an average exceeding 50 and an impressive tally of 20 fifty-plus scores. Despite facing a hitwicket dismissal on his Northamptonshire debut against Gloucestershire last week, Shaw rebounded strongly to leave a significant mark on the One-Day Cup.

Shaw in the records book

Shaw’s extraordinary knock also saw him rewrite the record books:

1. He overtook Ollie Robinson’s score of 206 (for Kent in 2022) to record the highest individual score in the One-Day Cup.

2. Surpassing Saif Zaib’s 136, Shaw achieved the highest score by a Northants batter in the tournament.

3. Shaw became only the second Indian, after Rohit Sharma, to score multiple List A double centuries.

4. He broke Cheteshwar Pujara’s record for the highest score by an Indian in the One-Day Cup.

5. Shaw became the third batter overall to achieve a double century in the One-Day Cup.
