Former Indian cricketer Pragyan Ojha has lauded Rohit Sharma for his exceptional century in the third T20I against Afghanistan, emphasizing the significance of his performance alongside Virat Kohli for the Indian team.
Rohit Sharma’s unbeaten 121 off 69 deliveries played a pivotal role in India’s total of 212/4 in the final T20I in Bengaluru on Wednesday. Despite the main game and the first Super Over ending in a tie, India emerged victorious in the second Super Over, securing a clean sweep in the series.
According to Ojha, Rohit’s innings showcased his ability to adapt to the demands of the situation. He mentioned, “The situation was grim. When he started, he knew they were bowling well, they were bowling good lengths, so he gave them respect. However, after that, the way he kept driving the game, he tactfully took every step.”
Reflecting on the value of Rohit and Kohli to the team, Ojha emphasized, “It shows why Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are so valuable for this team. It’s very important not only for you to play in such situations but also to take the youngsters along with you.”
Ojha also praised Rinku Singh for his mature performance, noting, “We are talking about Rohit but Rinku also showed maturity. Their understanding was fantastic. The calmness was maintained because Rohit Sharma was there in the middle and managing things.”
Looking ahead, Ojha expects Rohit and Kohli to continue making significant contributions to the team in future matches. He stated, “In matches going ahead, you will see such contributions from Virat Kohli and Rohit, who are the senior members, and such things are being expected from them.”
Rinku Singh made a significant contribution, scoring an unbeaten 69 off 39 deliveries, in a partnership that saw India recover from a precarious 22/4. The duo’s unbroken 190-run fifth-wicket partnership helped India reach a formidable total.
Rohit Sharma’s innings, which included 11 fours and eight sixes, not only powered India’s total but also demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure. Apart from his century in the main game, he played a crucial role in the Super Over, contributing 24 runs out of India’s total of 27.
In a poll conducted after the match, fans were asked whether Rohit Sharma’s knock validated the selectors’ decision to recall him and Virat Kohli to India’s T20I side. The majority of the respondents agreed that Rohit’s performance justified his selection.
The impressive display by Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh has left a positive impact on India’s T20I squad, setting high expectations for their future performances.
