The Chennai Super Kings solidify their position in the top 2 of the TATA IPL 2023 as they beat the Delhi Capitals convincingly by 27 runs. Winning the toss, Chennai decided to bat first on the track which was slow and low.
Chennai started cautiously as it was not easy to hit shots through the line. Devon Conway was trapped in front by Axar Patel as he tried to sweep the left-arm spinner.
But then, Rahane joined Gaikwad in building a strong partnership. The man on a mission Ajinkya Rahane started crisply against Axar Patel scoring 2 boundaries off his over.
But Axar stormed back in style just after the strategic time out scalping the prized wicket of Ruturaj Gaikwad. The Pune opener has made 408 runs at a strike rate of 147.29 at an average of 40.80. The batter has made significantly impro ved his strike rate from his previous seasons with his previous best being 136.
Dhoni praises Ruturaj
MS Dhoni showered praise on the young batter at the post-match press conference. Dhoni said that he is an effortless batter and has extreme game awareness.
“He (Gaikwad) is batting really well, he’s somebody once he starts scoring, he’s very effortless. He’s somebody who’s happy to rotate. He has the game awareness,” MS Dhoni said.
The skipper further added that Gaikwad is ready to adapt according to the demands of the team. He further called the batter as a ‘rare commodity’ saying that every team needs players like that in the team.
He is ready to adapt. You rarely get people like that. People who read the game, those are the kind of players you need in your team.”
Although Ruturaj failed to get going today, CSK bounced back after a sedate start. Dhoni said that with Moeen Ali and Jadeja getting the opportunity to bat in the middle will help the team in the latter stages of the tournament.
“The good thing is Moeen and Jaddu got a chance to bat. As we get closer to the last phase of the tournament, it’s important that everybody has a few deliveries under their belt. We need to be happy with our batting,” Dhoni added .
With finishing touches from Dhoni and Jadeja, CSK put up a total of 167 runs on the board which turned out to be more than par on this wicket.
CSK were clinical with the ball as they won the match by 27 runs. Pathirana scalped 3 wickets while Chahar took 2 wickets and Jadeja took one. The all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was named as the player of the match for his all-round performance.
