MS Dhoni enters the record books after his knock against the Lucknow Super Giants

In the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Monday, MS Dhonithe captain of the Chennai Super Kings, reached the milestone of 5000 runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

In his 208th IPL innings, Dhoni became the seventh cricketer to surpass the 5000-run threshold. The 5000-run club is also made up of AB de Villiers, Shikhar Dhawan, David Warner, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, and Virat Kohli.

After a four-year break, Dhoni returned to the Chepauk and started his batting in fine form by hitting a maximum off the first pitch from Mark Wood.

After Ravindra Jadeja’s dismissal, Dhoni entered the field and hit Wood over the wide third-man region for a six. He then sent the short ball deep over the square leg boundary for his second six. The CSK captain thus passed the 5000-run threshold in the IPL.

As CSK reached a formidable 217 for the loss of seven wickets, the CSK captain attempted another maximum but was caught by Ravi Bishnoi at deep cover.

As it happened

After the 10th over, Chennai Super Kings slowed down, but they still scored a staggering 217/7 in their 20 overs. In their first game at the Chepauk since 2019, MS Dhoni blasted two consecutive sixes, much to the joy of the CSK supporters. As KL Rahul won the toss and Decided to bowl first, Lucknow Super Giant got the ball off to a shaky start. Ruturaj Gaikwad, the captain of Chennai Super Kings, made the most of it.

The powerplay score of 79 runs by Gaikwad and his opening partner Devon Conway is the highest in IPL history for CSK at the Chepauk. Conway was on 47 off 29 balls when the Kiwi lost his wicket, and he ultimately succumbed for 57 off 31 balls. After that, CSK’s scoring pace slightly decreased as Shivam Mavi and Moeen Ali had trouble getting going. Yet, the pair ultimately succeeded in their huge shots, which led to their dismissal.

The other players made brief appearances as well, with Rayudu’s unbeaten 27 off 14 being particularly noteworthy before Dhoni hit two sixes off the first two balls he faced to pass 5000 IPL runs.
