The Gujarat Titans are hosting the Delhi Capitals at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium for Match 44 of the IPL 2023. Delhi Capitals skipper David Warner won the toss and decided to bat first on Ahmedabad’s high-scoring track. However, he would soon come to regret the decision, as Mohammed Shami had planned to just rip apart Delhi’s batting order. 4
A golden start
Mohammed Shami opened the bowling for the Gujarat Titans and struck on the first ball. Shami bowled a half volley first up, almost on the sixth stump, tempting Phil Salt to go for the hit. Shami’s plan worked as Salt tried to drive the ball only to hand a catch to David Miller who was fielding at extra cover. Miller didn’t even have to move an inch as the ball landed straight into his hands, making Delhi’s score 0 for 1.
However, Shami’s reign of terror was just beginning. The stalwart pacer struck again in his next over, and this time, his victim was Riley Rossouw who was making a comeback in tonight’s game as Mitchell Marsh was missing the game because of an ill. was a classical test match dismissal. The ball showed lateral movement, making Rossouw double-minded whether to play a shot or leave it. He finally decided to poke it defensively, only to edge it to the wicketkeeper, Wriddhiman Saha.
The third over
Shami had recorded figures of 2 for 6 in 2 overs. But, he decided not to stop there. In the next over, he wreaked havoc on the Delhi batters as he picked up two crucial wickets of Manish Pandey and Priyam Garg. Shami’s third over started with a wicket and ended with a wicket as well. Manish Pandey fell prey on the first delivery as he edged one back to Saha whereas Garg was Shami’s last wicket of the game.
Shami’s fiery spell eventually reduced GT’s score to 23/5 in 5 overs and they were running the risk of breaking RCB’s record of the lowest total, which was 49 runs. However, Axar Patel and Aman Hakim Khan steadied the Delhi innings and did not allow Gujarat bowlers to get any wickets up until the 14th over. Shami bowled 4 consecutive overs and ended his spell with 11 runs and 4 wickets.
