Michael Clarke thinks this Indian youngster is like Sehwag; wants India to keep faith in him

Many youngsters have made it to the Indian squad over the years on the basis of their performances at the domestic level, and in the IPL, but only a few of them have gone on to cement their places in the national side. Most of the other players have either not been able to perform in the limited opportunities given to them or have fallen down the pecking order with other players grabbing the opportunities more.

The same has happened with 22-year-old Prithvi Shaw who broke into the national side after a stellar performance at the domestic level. He scored century in his maiden Test against West Indies as well but his shortcomings against the balls nipping back in have cost him is place in the national side. Former Australia skipper Michael Clarke, however, thinks that India need to keep faith in the youngster.

“He is a terrific player like Sehwag. Sehwag was a genius, who took the game forward. For someone like me, I love that brand of cricket. That aggressive batsman at the top of the order. That’s why Sehwag was one of my favourite players. I would like see India keep faith in him, a player like Prithvi Shaw, knowing he is young,” Clarke said in the documentary ‘Down Underdogs’ on Sony Ten.

Clarke recalled Shaw’s failures in the Adelaide Test during India’s 2020-21 tour of Australia, where he was dismissed for 0 and 2. But the former Australia great said that it isn’t fair to have huge expectations from Shaw at this age. That was also the last Test Shaw played for India.

“It was very hard to have too much expectations from Prithvi Shaw. He needed more time. It was his first opportunity in Australia. You want to give him every change to see how he goes but unfortunately, he missed out in that Test match in Adelaide. It was his first tour of Australia, and I have no doubt he will come good,” Clarke said.
