Meet the purple cap holders after the first match of the WPL

At the DY Patil Stadium on Saturday, March 4, the Mumbai Indians (MI) took on the Gujarat Giants (GG) in the Women’s Premier League (WPLdebut )’s match. The team led by Harmanpreet Kaur won the game by 143 runs to get their season off to a great start.

Gujarat Giants chose to bowl first after winning the toss. Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner, the top all-rounder in the world, bowled the first over and Yatsika Bhatia played the first ball.

Tanuja Kanwar took the wicket of Yatsika while leg-spinner Georgia Wareham and Ashleigh Gardner struck twice in quick succession to remove both batters to place MI at 77-3 at the halfway mark of the first innings.

MI only dealt with boundaries in the second half of the innings as they racked up yet another monumental partnership for the fourth wicket, while skipper Harmanpreet lit the venue with a half-century. The final flourishes were applied by Pooja Vastrakar and Amelia Kerr as MI finished with a mammoth total of 207-5 in the first innings.

With the captain Beth Mooney limping off due to injury, the Giants had a nightmare powerplay. In six overs, they were reduced to 17-4 as wickets fell off the new ball. They were ultimately struck out for 64 runs to end the game and give MI a huge victory to start their campaign.

Purple Cap

The GG batteries were immediately overpowered by the MI bowlers. As they collected three wickets during the powerplay, Nat Sciver and Alex Wong made the new ball talk. The English international took second place as the pacers finished with scores of 2-5 and 1- 7.

Saika Ishaque, a left-arm spinner, finished first on the Purple Cap list after taking four wickets for only 11 runs with five balls left in her spell.

Amelia Kerr placed third on the list after starting her innings with a double-wicket maiden and posting clean scores of 2-12. She was overtaken by Nat Brunt as the latter had a better economy (2.5) than Amelia (6.0)
