Meet Suyash Sharma, the 19-year-old mystery spinner of Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders spun the web around the Bangalore batters to script a dominating victory over the Southern franchise. They were bamboozled by the troika of KKR spinners and were clueless against them. Kolkata beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 81 runs at the Eden Gardens.

Kolkata has been known to unearth mystery spinners. Back in 2012 when Gambhir spotted a young Sunil Narine playing for Trinidad and Tobago franchise in the Champions League. He was adamant to buy him in the auction, which he did for 700,000 USD. Since then, The calm and composed Narine has given countless happy memories to the Kolkata side.

In 2020, KKR again bought a mystery spinner in Varun Chakravarthy. He has also been an integral part of the franchise and left the best of the batters clueless. His excellent IPL season in 2021 helped him earn a place in the 2021 T20 World Cup.

While these two are known to fool the batters with numerous variations, a young 19-year-old spinner from Delhi took 3 wickets on his IPL debut. Suyash Sharma left his mark during his debut match of the IPL. dismiss Anuj Rawat who top edged the ball to the third man.

The bowler followed it with a “Main Hua na” celebration telling everyone to take notice of him and his wizard-like skills.

The bowler then dismissed Dinesh Karthik with a ball that turned away from Karthik. Karthik top edged the ball in trying to play the ball over covers. His last victim was Karn Sharma who was leg before wicket in trying to sweep the bowler.

Suyash aged 19, was signed by the Knights at his base price of Rs 20 lakh during the auction in January of last year. According to Knights CEO Venky Mysore, the KKR scouts discovered the Delhi-based leg-spinner while watching one of the U -25 games.

Suyash has played for Delhi at the U-25 level, but his performances were not particularly impressive. Suyash was flown down to the academy in Mumbai last year and invited to attend trials, but with Chandrakant Pandit in charge and Abhishek Nayar leading the KKR academy , things changed. He not only wowed the KKR scouts but also coach Pandit and Nayar with him.

After the match, the KKR coach showered praise on the young leggie. He said that the bowler has a very good attitude and the batters find it difficult to read him.

KKR coach Chandrakant Pandit on Suyash Sharma

“We saw him in trial matches and were extremely happy with the way he bowled. He’s quick through the air and difficult to pick. He’s inexperienced but shows a very good attitude.”

Suyash has a swift action and bowls quicker and flatter through the air making the batters difficult to read him off the pitch. He bowls the in-between length where the batters cannot get underneath the ball or attack him. As not many batters have picked his Variations, he occasionally floats one up in the air and gets them to attack him and price out their wicket. Karthik and Rawat’s wicket was a deception in the air and the batters’ inability to read the spin.

But the challenge lies ahead for the young leggie. With batters trying to decode his mystery, he needs to develop his game more. But he is just 19 and surely will play a huge role on slow turning tracks of the Eden Gardens this season.
