Meet Harmanpreet Kaur – Star Indian in Melbourne Renegades for 2022 WBBL

Harmanpreet Kaur is best known in Australia for her outstanding performance in the 2021 edition of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), becoming Player of the Series and awarded Player of the Match thrice. She is the most valuable player for the team this season too.

The 33-year-old all-rounder is currently the all-format captain of the Women’s National Cricket Team in India and has the fame of receiving the Arjuna Award by the Indian Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in 2017. She is the first in the country to score 100 in a Women’s T20I match in 2018. She is simultaneously the first Indian cricketer to play 100 T20I in 2019 while playing against South Africa.

Harmanpreet Kaur was first signed by Sydney Thunder in June 2016 for the WBLL and became the first cricketer from India who was contracted for an overseas T20 franchise. She was again picked by Sydney Thunder for the 2018-19 WBBL edition. She has been currently retained by Melbourne Renegades for the upcoming season of the WBLL, which is scheduled to be played between October 13 and November 20.

Her best-performing scores in last year’s WBBL were 41 off 37 balls against Adelaide Strikers, 43 off 32 balls against Sydney Sixers, 73 (not out) off 48 balls against Adelaide Strikers and became Player of the Match, 65 off 32 balls against Brisbane Heat and became Player of the Match and 81 (not out) off 55 balls. She performed equally fine in her bowling with 2/17 in 4 overs against Sydney Sixers and became Player of the Match, 2/31 in 4 overs against Adelaide Strikers and again became Player of the Match, 1/31 in 3 overs against Perth Scorchers, and 3/22 in four overs against Melbourne Stars.

With 31 votes she grabbed the title of Player of the Tournament in 2021 WBBL. The second place was shared by Sophie Devine of Perth Scorchers and Beth Mooney from the same team with 28 votes each.

Harmanpreet Kaur Career

Harmanpreet Kaur debuted at the age of 20 in the 2009 Women’s Cricket World Cup against Pakistan. She was thereafter selected for the 2009 ICC Women’s World T20 and her first clash in the short format was against England.

She captained the Indian team in the final match of the 2012 Women’s T20 Asia Cup following the injuries of both captain Mithali Raj and vice-captain Jhulan Goswami. It was her debut match as captain and played against Pakistan. Her 81 runs helped the team lift the cup.

A year later, Kaur was selected as the ODI captain of women’s team and played against Bangladesh. She scored 195 runs in the second ODI.

She has pocketed centuries four times in ODIs playing against England in 2013, Bangladesh in 2013, Australia in 2017 and West Indies in 2022. In her T20I career, she has so far managed just one century playing for Providence, Guyana and against New Zealand in 2018.

She currently plays for Railways Women, Supernovas and Melbourne Renegades in domestic tournaments. She earlier played for Punjab Women, Sydney Thunder, Lancashire Thunder and Manchester Originals.

Her best batting performances are 171 not out in WODI and 81 not out in WBBL while her best bowling performances include 5/44 in WTest, 2/16 in WODI, 4/23 in WT20I and 4/27 in WBBL.

Harmanpreet Kaur Personal Life

Born in Moga (Punjab) to a Basketball and Volleyball player father and housewife mother, Kaur took cricketing after joining the Gian Jyoti School Academy, which is about thirty kilometers away from her residence. She is learned to have been inspired by Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag while working for Indian Railways in Mumbai.
