South African coach Mark Boucher has claimed he remains committed to his job despite confirming on Thursday that he will face charges of serious misconduct related to allegations of racism. Boucher is one of the former Proteas cricketers to fight racism allegations.
During a series of hearings before the Social Justice and Nation Building Committee last year, some black players claimed they were racially abused on the national team. Former left-arm spinner Paul Adams told the committee that racial slurs were directed at him in a group song in the late 1990s.
Boucher admitted he sang the song with his teammates and apologized in a written filing to the committee. Of the latest developments, Boucher said: “I look forward to addressing and defending the allegations that have been made, and will do so at the hearing in due course. For now I am solely focused on my responsibilities as head coach of the Proteas.”
South African Cricket (CSA) has confirmed that the former goalkeeper batsman, who was appointed head coach of the national team in December 2019, will meet disciplinary hearing chairman Terry Motto on January 26 to “fix the timing of proceedings” surface”
“While Mr. Boucher has been charged with serious misconduct, which could result in his dismissal, the CSA emphasizes that it is important that an independent investigation test all allegations before any sanctions issues arise,” the CSA statement said.
Boucher played 147 Tests and 295 ODIs between 1997 and 2012 and was a legend in South African cricket until his image was damaged to some extent after being embroiled in a racism controversy. However, Boucher has not been suspended and will remain in charge of the last two ODIs against India, which will take place on Friday (Paral) and Sunday (Cape Town).
South Africa made a comeback from a 0-1 deficit to seal the three-match Test series at 2-1. They are also 1-0 in the three-game series, winning Pal’s first ODI by 31 on Wednesday.
