On Tuesday, June 27, in Mumbai, the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially revealed the itinerary for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. For the first time in history, India will be the sole host of the World Cup. The previous time India hosted the competition, under the leadership of MS Dhonithey won the prized title.
Yuvraj Singh was a key figure in the triumph, as he was named Player of the Tournament after scoring 362 runs and taking 15 wickets. Former India cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth believes Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel may play a similar role in the forthcoming World Cup as India looks to end their drought.
Srikanth told Hindustan Times
“In the 2011 World Cup, you saw a lot of all-rounders coming into play. We had a fantastic side, very well led by (MS) Dhoni, too, and that time we have Yuvraj Singh. I believe Ravindra Jadeja will do what Yuvraj Singh did in the 2011 World Cup. I believe Jadeja, the Axar Patels… these people will play a very crucial role if India has to win this 2023 World Cup,” Srikkanth said.
For many years, Jadeja has been one of India’s most valued assets in all three formats. The 34-year-old has played 174 One-Day Internationals and scored 2526 runs at an average of 32.80, including 13 fifties. In the format, he has also taken 191 wickets at an average of 37.39.
With his all-round abilities, the Southpaw helped India win the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. In the final, he was named Player of the Match for his all-round performance, scoring 33* off 25 balls in the first innings and then picking 2/24 with the ball. With 12 wickets, Jadeja was also the tournament’s leading wicket-taker.
The all-rounder is likely to repeat his performance in the 2019 World Cup.
