India captain KL Rahul said they conceded 20 more goals with the ball and didn’t have enough partnership in their first ODI against South Africa’s Pal. India were poor on the pitch and lost a lot of free runs through mistakes. When it was their turn to bat, they dropped from 1-for-138 to 7-for-199. Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli scored 50 but failed to take India across the finish line.
After a 31-round loss, Rahul admitted that the middleman with the bat and the ball cost them. He explained: “It was a great game. There was a lot to learn. We started very well, we couldn’t get a wicket in the middle. We’ll see how we can get a wicket in the middle and stop the opposition. Can’t go down the middle. We’ve had a mediocre first 20-25 rounds of the game. I thought we’d catch it easily, but SA bowled really well and got the crucial wickets.”
When asked if the wicket had changed drastically, Rahul replied that he didn’t bat after the 20th, so he doesn’t know. The 29-year-old added: “Virat and Sijal said it was a good wicket, you just have to spend some time in the middle and unfortunately we couldn’t continue working together. They did a really good job, They put pressure on the bowlers and we couldn’t get those wickets into the middle.”
The one-day series’ backup captains claim they are eager to learn from their mistakes. He said: “290+ is an extra 20 runs, but we just need more middle partners. Every game is important to us and we all want to go out there and play our best. We’ve had a period It’s not time to play a day of cricket and we have WC in mind and we want the best XI in the park. We will make mistakes but we will learn from them.”
South Africa batted first after winning the toss.
