Team India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah lauded national limited-overs skipper Rohit Sharma for always backing him and giving him confidence. Bumrah started his IPL career for the Mumbai Indians (MI) back in 2013 where he picked up the wicket of Virat Kohli, the former skipper of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Bumrah currently plays under Sharma even in ODIs and T20Is after the latter took over from Kohli a couple of months ago. The pacer said that the 34-year-old Rohit has given him the freedom to set his own fields while bowling. Bumrah said that Sharma brings in a sense of calmness that has helped him stay composed in challenging circumstances.

Rohit Sharma has a lot of trust in me to date: Jasprit Bumrah

“I started playing a lot for MI under Rohit. He saw me bowling in the nets and he always backed me and gave me confidence. He trusted me a lot even in the early years, stuff like giving me the important overs,” Bumrah said on Ravichandran Ashwin’s YouTube Show ‘DRS with Ash’.

“He has a lot of trust in me to date and we have reached the stage when he tells me to set the field on my own and tell me any changes. The process has worked so far and our relationship has really developed,” Bumrah added .

“On some days, things might not go well but he always has kept the atmosphere quite simple and calm. All these have really helped me as a cricketer… it’s helped me not to get too overawed in a tough situation,” Bumrah added.

Sharma recently captained India to a 3-0 win over the Kieron Pollard-led West Indies at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. After the win, India also became ICC’s no.1 ranked T20I team after a gap of six years. Sharma succeeded Kohli as the captain after the 2021 T20 World Cup in Oman and the UAE.
