Team India pacer Jasprit Bumrah said it would be an honour if he had the chance to lead the Indian team in the near future. With Virat Kohli no longer captaining any of the three formats, Rohit Sharma is likely to take over in due course. In his absence, KL Rahul was named captain for the day trip to South Africa, while Bumrah was selected as vice-captain.
Rohit will turn 35 in a few months and his appointment as captain could be a short-term arrangement. As such, Bumrah may take up the role in the near future. Asked if he harbored ambitions to be captain, the Pacers said in a pre-ODI series press conference: “It would be an honor if given the chance, I don’t see any player (who ) will say no, and I am no exception. With any leadership team, I want to do my best and contribute as much as I can.”
Bumrah adds that even if he’s not part of the leadership team, he’s always looking to mentor new people on the team. He explained: “I look at the situation the same way… taking responsibility and talking to the players and helping them has always been my approach, and my approach will always be to keep any situation further in mind.”
When asked how the vice-captain’s duties will change his role in the ODI series, he replied that it doesn’t matter if there is a position. The 28-year-old said: “For me, the role hasn’t changed at all. I have to do my job first, don’t I? Contribute as much as I can and then help KL on the pitch when needed. , and share the mentality of the bowlers about what kind of pitch you can keep, and I’ve always wanted to do that.”
Bumrah continued: “Even if I’m not a vice-captain, I’ll try to talk to some young people, have a lot of discussions about what kind of areas need to be set up and the same roles, and I’ll try to do that again. I’m not going to take on specific role or increase the pressure. Yes, help KL in any way possible and try to stay calm.”
India will start their three-match ODI series against South Africa on January 19 at Bolan Park in Palestine
