IPL 2022: Strongest Mumbai Indians Playing XI

Five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI) had a very interesting tryst with the two-day mega auction for the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Having retained four prominent individuals from their core group – captain Rohit Sharma, lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah, middle-order bat Suryakumar Yadav and allrounder Kieron Pollard – MI focused on reconstructing their squad around them.

The idea was also to bring back a few of their familiar faces. Once Pandya brothers Hardik (Gujarat Titans) and Krunal (Lucknow Super Giants) were no longer available, they went wholeheartedly after wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan.

Kishan, in fact, became the most expensive buy at the IPL 2022 Mega Auction after MI made a winning bid of INR 15.25 crores to reavail his services. The ownership group made it absolutely clear that they were looking to retain Kishan if they had the option to choose one more player.

MI also made two notable overseas signings in England pacer Jofra Archer and Singapore-born middle-order batter Tim David. Archer’s one was particularly interesting, for the tall speedster will not be taking part in IPL 2022 because of an elbow rehab. But the prospect of Archer forming a pairing with Bumrah in the latter editions of the new cycle was so exciting that MI reserved their money for him.

Despite the departure of Quinton de Kock from the scene, MI have maintained their first-choice balance by having a wicketkeeping opener in Kishan alongside Rohit. It allows them to play an extra batter or a bowler depending on their needs.

Historically, they’ve also banked on multiple utility options for the fifth-bowler and powerhitting duties. Following the departure of Hardik and Krunal, much of the focus and responsibility will fall on the shoulders of Pollard. However, to keep him company, MI now also have Australia’s pace allrounder Daniel Sams as a potential No.7.

Spin is perhaps MI’s weaker suit, still, but they’ll try and make up for it with their pace department led by Bumrah. Before Archer comes on board for 2023 and 2024 editions of the IPL, they’ll have left-arm pacer Tymal Mills joining the pace force with their Indian spearhead.

Mumbai Indians Captain for IPL 2022

Question marks have been raised from time to time whether Rohit Sharma has been doing enough with the bat for MI but the elegant opener has been entrusted with the captaincy duties once again. MI have banked on Rohit to continue producing the goods at the helm, having clinched all of their five titles in skipper’s capacity over the last nine years.

Mumbai Indians Coaching and Support Staff for IPL 2022

MI have got a huge support staff, backed with an equally resourced scouting team led by head scout Parthiv Patel, with the intention to not leave any stone unturned for the side. Zaheer Khan is their director of cricket, Mahela Jayawardene is their head coach. Robin Singh and Shane Bond mentor the side for batting and bowling departments, respectively.
