After two other players Wriddhiman Saha (SRH) and Amit Mishra (DC) tested positive, the 2021 version of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was suspended indefinitely on Tuesday. SRH should face MI at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Tuesday.
BCCI officially announces:
“The Indian Premier League Council (IPL GC) and the Indian Cricket Control Committee (BCCI) have unanimously decided in an emergency meeting to postpone the IPL 2021 season, with immediate effect.
BCCI does not want to compromise on the safety of the participants, support staff and other participants in the organization of IPL. The safety, health and well-being of all stakeholders must be kept in mind when making this decision.
This is a difficult time, especially in India. Although we are trying to bring some positive and cheers, the top priority is to suspend the game now. In this difficult time, everyone must return to their families and relatives.
BCCI will make every effort to arrange the safe passage of all participants in IPL 2021.
BCCI would also like to thank all medical workers, state associations, participants, support staff, franchises, sponsors, partners and all service providers who have done their best to organize IPL 2021, even in these extremely difficult times. “
Earlier on Monday, two KKR players tested positive for COVID-19 after two KKR vs. RCB matches in Ahmedabad were cancelled. In the third round of testing in the past four days, Varun Chakaravarthy and Sandeep Warrier were confirmed positive.
At the same time, there were reports that BCCI rejected the proposal of the IPL Council to call for the UAE to play.
Quoting a source to tell TOI
“The UAE has always been the first choice for the IPL GC of this year’s tournament. Even a week before the start of the IPL, they asked BCCI to move the entire event to the UAE. The UAE Cricket Committee was immediately on alert, even if BCCI decided to change the game plan within a short period of time. They are also willing to do IPL again.
“However, no one in the BCCI showed the urgency of taking this step. Officials have been waiting for each other to take the first step, and the proposal was eventually rejected.” Source added.
