Indian cricket fans can breathe a sigh of relief as former Captain Virat Kohli rejoins the squad in South Africa, ensuring his availability for the crucial first Test match commencing on December 26 in Centurion. Kohli’s absence from intra-squad practice matches had raised questions, but recent reports shed light on the reason behind his temporary departure.

Strategic Planning and Training Sessions

Contrary to speculation, a News18 report reveals that Virat Kohli’s absence was a result of a pre-planned trip to London. The senior BCCI official stated, “Look at the player in question, it’s Virat Kohli. He is very well planned when it comes to these things, and his London trip was communicated and planned well in advance.” This clarifies that Kohli’s absence wasn’t abrupt or due to any family emergency.

The official further highlighted that Kohli had multiple training sessions with the team before leaving for London on December 19. He elaborated, “Kohli left India for South Africa on December 15. Had good 3-4 training sessions before he went to London on December 19. For the next few days, he was in London and has now linked up with the Test squad and will, in all likelihood, train in Centurion tomorrow.”

The revelation underscores Kohli’s meticulous planning and commitment to maintaining peak fitness and form.

South Africa’s Confidence Despite Challenges

Meanwhile, South Africa’s head coach Shukri Conrad expressed confidence in his team’s performance despite the challenges posed by injuries to key players. Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi, key pacers, are set to return after injury layoffs. Conrad stated, “KG (Rabada) and Lungi are still in the 15-member squad and available for selection. We will make that decision tomorrow. Hopefully, tomorrow morning we will have a full squad of 15 to select from.”

The coach emphasized the freshness of the players and downplayed concerns about their match readiness, highlighting his belief in their ability to perform at their best.

As the cricketing world awaits the much-anticipated Test series, Kohli’s return adds a significant boost to India’s campaign, while South Africa aims to overcome challenges and make their mark in the upcoming matches.
