September 2021: Ajinkya Rahane

November 2021: Cheteshwar Pujara
Ajinkya Rahane was no longer in contention for the vice-captaincy role as his place in the side was in danger. Hence with Pujara being the mainstay in the team with his place a certainty, the Surashtra batter was named as Kohli’s deputy during New Zealand’s tour of India.
December 2021: KL Rahul
KL Rahul had pretty much solidified his place in the side after performing well in England. The management was also looking to groom him as the future leader of the side in a few years’ time. But there were certain question marks about his role when Rohit was in the side.
But just before the important tour of South Africa, Rohit Sharma got injured and hence KL was asked to don the role of Vice Captain. This also happened to be Virat’s last series as an Indian Test Skipper. Virat got injured in the 2nd Test where KL made his captaincy debut.
February 2022: Jasprit Bumrah
Sri Lanka toured India to play 2 test matches. India made some massive changes in their Test Side. Rohit Sharma became the full-time skipper of the Indian side with Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane dropped from the side. KL Rahul was unavailable for that series Due to his marriage. Hence Jasprit Bumrah was named as the vice-captain of the side.
June 2022: Rishabh Pant

Rohit Sharma injured himself in the ODI series against Bangladesh. Hence he was ruled out of the Test Series. A good performance in the one-off test against England in June ensured that Pujara remained in the test side. Not only his place in the side was guaranteed, but he also became the vice-captain of the side. In an interesting turn of events, even with Rishabh Pant in the side, surprisingly Pujara was named as the Indian deputy for the Bangladesh tests with KL Rahul as the skipper. Easwaran was a part of the squad for that series.
February 2023: KL Rahul was removed from the VC role in the middle of a series
In the 4-match Border Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, KL Rahul was the vice-captain of the side in the first 2 tests of the important series. With dismal performances from the Karnataka opener, he was dropped from the side for the last 2 tests . There was no deputy named for the remaining 2 test matches.
WTC Final 2023
India missed the services of KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah in the Final. With the final being a one-off match, the selectors did not name anyone as Rohit’s Deputy. Ajinkya Rahane made a comeback to the side due to an impressive IPL and made an immediate impact with 89 runs in the first innings.
June 2023: Ajinkya Rahane
India will start the new cycle of the WTC facing the West Indies. In an interesting turn of events, Rahane was renamed as the vice-captain of the side. It was a totally surprising and unexpected move from the BCCI. Cheteshwar Pujara was dropped from the side with the management looking for Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad at number 3. It is a complete circle for Rahane who was dropped earlier in the cycle and will start the new cycle again as the vice-captain of the Indian side. short-term solution until Pant, Bumrah, and KL return.
