Former Australia captain Rich Ponting believes that if England does not gain a foothold in Adelaide during the pink ball test, they may end up being whitewashed in the ongoing ashes. On Saturday, England surrendered in the first Test, leading Australia 1-0. Recovering their second game 220-2, they collapsed with a score of 297 in the inspired bowling lineup. Australia then won with 9 wickets to 20 points.
The second test of the series will be held at the Adelaide Oval Stadium on Thursday, December 16. According to Ponting, if the England team also faltered in the second test, they could end up with a 0-5 defeat like the 2006-07 season.
Ponting said in an interview with cricket.com.au: “The situation in Australia will only get better. Those situations (in Brisbane) are very similar to the British… they may not be anywhere else. Get so much exercise for the entire series.”
“We saw them playing very well under the lights in the last tour in Adelaide, everything was in perfect place-Australia had to hit the ball, the lights came on, brand new balls, clear nights. We have been there too. Adelaide did nothing at other times for the Pink Ball, whether it was a new ball or not. If they did not win in Adelaide, then there may be a shadow of 2006-07,” the Australian legend continued.
Ponting also made a hole in England’s decision to rest James Anderson and Stuart Broad, who have claimed more than 1,000 test wickets as a pair. He lashed out at this decision, wondering, “If they don’t just prepare them for Adelaide, I don’t understand why they would exclude (Broad and Anderson). I’m still shocked by this. …One of those two must be played.”
As Ben Stokes’ knee injury exacerbated the plight of the England team, Ponting concluded, “Maybe they will only play in Adelaide or Broad or Anderson. Many of them may only depend on ( Ben) How Stokes started from now to the start of the Adelaide game.”
England have not won a test in Australia since they won 3-1 in the 2010-11 season.
