ICC gets flak on Twitter for Wrong Updates on IND vs SA Women’s Warm-up Match

Cricket Twitter unleashed its wrath against the International Cricket Council (ICC) for messing up with the coverage and score updates of the untelevised India-South Africa warm-up match played on Sunday (February 27).

Fans didn’t mince words in expressing their anger as confusion built-up around the result of the fixture played at the Mainpower Oval in Rangiora in the build-up to the women’s ODI World Cup in New Zealand.

With no clarity from ICC or any of its full-member boards involved in the World Cup, fans jumped up the gun and aimed for the governing body’s website that left much to be desired at the basic job of updating the scorecard at least every over, if not per ball.

The scorecard for the ICC women’s World Cup warm-up match got stuck with irregular updates.

ICC messes up IND vs SA warm-up game updates; fans react in anger

What only further triggered anger among fans was the wrong result displayed on the ICC website, which showed that South Africa won the game when in reality it was India, who had clinched the thriller by 2 runs.

Made to bat first after losing the toss, India made a fighting 244/9 in their 50 overs thanks to an encouraging hundred from Harmanpreet Kaur (103) after opener Yastika Bhatia’s half-century (58). Later, India defended their score by the barest of margins, with Rajeshwari Gayakwad (4/44) leading the wickets chart.

The poor coverage of the warm-up game from ICC and their incorrect updates befooled even the Cricket South Africa (CSA) admin, who initially believed their team had won the game by 4 wickets and tweeted as such, only to revoke it later.

It was never the case, as Bhatia herself made a point to inform everyone on social media with the correct scoresheet for the game.

The whole episode was perfectly summed up by an interesting thread recorded by The Field’s Deputy Sports Editor Vinayakk on Twitter, who tried his best to keep fans updated about the game.

Here is how the fans reacted to ICC’s mishandling of affairs:

The disappointing start to the build-up towards the World Cup and the embarrassing scenes over social media is the last thing ICC would’ve wanted. The governing body will have to surely up their game or fear facing more backlash for their inapt coverage of the warm-up games.
