Jofra Archer says he feels he has “let everyone down” after missing England’s trip to the Ashes through injury.
The World Cup-winning fast bowler has been out for 10 months and is in trouble elbow problems Having had two surgeries, England have won just one of the 12 Tests he has missed in that time.
This includes a 4-0 Ashes series loss to Australia, with England struggling in every division.
Archer is groping for a return to action, having played a limited run in Barbados this week, but sees himself as a future Test player despite his injury.
The 26-year-old told the Daily Mail: “Looking at the Ashes, I think I let everyone down a little bit when you see fast bowlers taking 90 per cent of the wickets – but You didn’t get hurt on purpose.
“Of course I want to be a part of what makes this England team a success, but the past year has taught me that you can plan whatever you want and then something happens to change everything.”
He is looking forward to working with the West Indies testing team next month, adding: “I might even be in full training and not feel like the physio is watching me all the time.
“Funny cops aren’t coming out anymore! Even now I’m throwing and I can turn around and see Ben Langley, the physio, looking at me and saying with his eyes, ‘No more intensity’.
“Right now, I can do anything, but it’s just one small step. I don’t know when I’m going to play, I just want to build and it’s all about what I can live with at any given moment.
“I’ve waited long enough that it doesn’t make sense to rush the last bit. I have five months at my disposal, so as long as I’m ready I’ll be fine.”
