Gary Wilson, the current Ireland Men’s High Performance Coach, is set to join the coaching staff of the Pretoria Capitals as a Consultant Coach for the upcoming SA20 franchise cricket tournament in South Africa, starting on January 10, 2024. Wilson, 37, has had a distinguished career as a player, representing Ireland in 292 matches before retiring in 2020. Since then, he has been actively involved in coaching, working with the North West Warriors and serving as the senior Ireland Men’s squad’s High Performance Batting & Wicketkeeping Coach since 2021.

This move marks Wilson’s first coaching stint outside of Ireland or the UK. He expressed his excitement about the opportunity, emphasizing the importance of preparing for the evolving T20 format, especially with the T20 World Cup scheduled for June 2024. Wilson thanked Cricket Ireland for releasing him for the tournament and expressed gratitude to the Pretoria Capitals for the opportunity to contribute to their squad.

The SA20 tournament will be a crucial platform for Wilson to gain new insights and experiences in T20 cricket, working alongside renowned figures like former Irish head coach Graham Ford and players he has previously played with or against.
