Flight Delay Frustrates Indian Test Players Ahead of ODI Series in the Caribbean

The Indian cricket team‘s journey in the Caribbean took an unexpected twist as members of the Test side, who are also part of the ODI squad, were left miffed and fatigued due to a flight delay ahead of the white-ball leg against the West Indies. After the second Test ended in a draw at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad, the players were slated to travel from Trinidad to Barbados for the first ODI. However, a flight delay disrupted their travel plans and added to their woes.

Missed flight causes inconvenience

The players, including skipper Rohit Sharma and the dynamic Virat Kohli, were scheduled to leave Trinidad at 11 p.m. to reach Barbados in the early morning. But much to their dismay, the flight took off around 3 a.m., causing sleep deprivation and annoyance among the players who were already facing a tight schedule between matches. With very little time between the Test series and the ODI series, the delay was certainly the last thing they needed.

According to an Indian Express report, the team management promptly requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to avoid late-night flights in the future, as players need ample time to rest and recuperate between matches. The BCCI has agreed to the request and is working on revising the schedule to accommodate the players’ need for adequate rest.

“They had left the hotel by 8:40 pm for the airport and had to wait for a long time at the airport. The team management has requested us to book a morning flight instead of late-night flights as players want some rest post-game. The BCCI has agreed to it and is planning to revise the next schedule,” a source within the BCCI stated.

Prominent players missed the flight

The inconvenience caused by the delayed flight also led to the Test squad members opting to skip the practice session in Barbados, as they needed to prioritize rest and recovery. The affected players in the Indian cricket team are not just any ordinary names, but key members of the squad who hold pivotal roles both in Test and ODI formats.

Alongside Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the list includes Mohammed Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja, Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shardul Thakur, Jaydev Unadkat, Axar Patel, and Mukesh Kumar. While vice-captain Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson, spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav, and pacer Umran Malik had already reached Barbados a couple of days earlier for the three-match ODI series.

The first two ODIs are scheduled to take place in Barbados before the players again travel back to Trinidad for the final ODI, making the already hectic travel schedule even more demanding.
