The England team recruited captain Adam Hollioake the day before to strengthen their exhausted coaching team before the fourth test in Sydney.
Due to the Covid-19 outbreak in the camp, the four main members of the team behind the scenes were left in Melbourne. Head coach Chris Silverwood is in isolation from his family, while spinning coach Gitan Patel, fast bowling instructor Jon Lewis and head of strength and fitness Darren Venez all tested positive.
This led to an emergency call for Holioak, the former Sarri all-around player who was known as an innovative thinker during his playing career and was the captain of the ODI team 14 times from 1997 to 1999. Although his time at the helm is relatively short, it does include a rare in the 1990s-the success of the Sharjah Cup on the global stage in 1997.
Hollioake made his test debut with his late brother Ben in the 1997 Ashes. He was seen as the perfect addition because he lived near the Gold Coast and was a friend and former teammate of Silverwood’s substitute Graham Thorpe. Local health restrictions mean that as a latecomer from a different state, he can currently only work outdoors with the team.
The 50-year-old has enjoyed a variety of careers after retirement, including a brief involvement in mixed martial arts, but has also served as a coach for Queensland and the English Lions.
Some formalities need to be completed before his tenure is approved. The ongoing Covid specter will cause logistical problems that don’t usually occur, but England hopes to allow him to participate in most of the training time before the test starts on January 5.
“We are talking with Adam to see if we can let him in. He is on the Gold Coast and I talked to him yesterday. He is very enthusiastic, so we want to see if we can do this,” Thorpe said.
“I know Adelaide very well. He can bring some energy to the dressing room and the philosophical aspects of life, which is very important in this era. He was in good spirits yesterday.
“He also knows this group of players, so he will be very comfortable in the dressing room. He is a very good philosopher who has experienced certain things in his life. I know him very well, if we can let him in, He will be a good person.”
Thorpe is currently the only full-time coach of the England and Wales cricket team, supported by Ant Botha of Nottinghamshire and goalkeeper James Foster, who have signed short-term consulting contracts.
