South African lower-order batter Lizaad Williams found himself in the midst of a rarest of rare DRS glitches as he almost got out because of an incorrect replay and datebase categorisation following a technological error this Friday (March 31).
The incident is from Day 2 of the first Test between South Africa and Bangladesh played in Durban. Facing opposition pacer Ebadot Hossain a few overs prior to the lunch interval, the batter tried to flick a straightish delivery down leg but ended up missing it.
The ball thumped onto his front pad in line with the three sticks, leading to an obvious LBW appeal from the tourists. To Bangladesh’s pleasure, standing umpire Marais Erasmus gave Lizaad Williams out, which prompted the batter to then opt for the review.
This is where DRS showcased a funny and rare replay glitch as it initially bracketed the ball that clearly pitched outside the line of the leg-stump to have landed “outside off”. This incorrect frame resulted in four reds on all the important accounts on the big screen and Bangladesh felt they have their man.
Their celebrations were cut short, however, by a rightful change in the DRS procedure, as finally the correct replay was played on the screen where the pitching error had been rectified and Williams was allowed to continue his innings.

But how did the DRS make such a huge error for Lizaad Williams?
It is because of a database error in the DRS process where Lizaad Williams had been recorded as a right-hander before the match.
As explained by the SuperSport commentary panel on duty for the Test series, the database had an incorrect recording of the Proteas’ left-hander, who was initially misunderstood by the technology as a right-hander.
The DRS, a constantly evolving technology, has had its share of errors seen on the cricket field. But never before has something like this taken place, with a batter getting etched incorrectly in the database and considered a rightie despite being a leftie.

Such glitches can be really frustrating for players, especially if the incorrect call stays and the match officials make no effort to go against the rigid set of jurisdictions.
Thankfully for Lizaad Williams, the DRS had a timely rejig in its process and the correct decision was upheld on the giant screen, allowing him to resume his batting effort at the crease.
