Cummins appointed as Australia test captain

After Tim Paine decided to step down on Friday, Pat Cummins was appointed as the Australian test captain.

Former test captain Steve Smith will play Cummins as his deputy. Smith was fired as captain following the Cape Town ball tampering scandal in 2018.

Tim Paine resigned last week because of a historical investigation of pornographic texts by a female colleague. After today’s press release, Paine has withdrawn from the selection.

Cricket Tasmania-Paine’s state side said he will immediately suspend cricket matches for the “foreseeable future.”

When taking over the vacant position, Cummins said in a statement: “I am honored to accept this role before the arrival of Ash Summer.”

“I hope I can provide the same leadership that Paine has given the team over the past few years.

“With Steve and I as the captain, there are many very senior players and some outstanding young talents in this team. We are a strong and close team.

“This is an unexpected privilege. I am very grateful and look forward to it.”

The 28-year-old fast bowler is the second professional fast bowler to hold the position after Ray Lindwall was solely responsible for testing in India in 1956.

His first task is to preserve the ashes. The first test match will start on December 8th at The Gabba in Brisbane.

The decision to become a fast bowler captain is rare in modern times. The physical requirements of fast bowlers in a five-game test series meant that many teams rotated their fast bowlers in a series of games.

Many players will enter the “red zone” when they hit too many shots in a short period of time. Fatigue greatly increases the possibility of injury-Cummins has a sad history of this.

After the IT20 World Cup, Cummins will directly enter the test series with almost no rest. The current captain, Cummins probably played 25 days of cricket in just 42 days.

Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood will support him in entering the fast bowling team. The three-pronged offense will be supported by Jhye Richardson and Michael Neser waiting on the wings.

Steve Smith becomes deputy

Since Cummins is a fast bowler, Steve Smith will assume great responsibility on the court as his deputy. Pat Cummins wants to bowl as much as possible. Therefore, Smith will rotate fast bowlers to help Cummins avoid over-throwing and keep them fresh.

Smith returned to his leadership role after being fired in Cape Town in 2018. The Australian cricket team’s leadership ban on Smith expires in March 2020.

Steve Smith said: “I am a more comprehensive person (than 2018), which in turn makes me a better leader.”

Pat Cummins

Cummins proposed Cummins and Smith as the captain candidates for the five-member team after being selected by the national selection team of Bailey, Dodmed and men’s coach Justin Langer.

As a popular figure in the Australian and world cricket circles, Cummins currently ranks among the best in the ICC men’s bowling test rankings.

He scored 164 wickets in 34 tests, with an average score of 21.59. Cummins has become the nemesis of the England team in the past two Ashes series, ranking among the top with 23 wickets in the 2017-18 season and 29 wickets in the 2019 away series.
