Courtney Walsh’s tenure ends as head coach of WI Women’s cricket team

Courtney Walsh’s tenure as the head coach of the West Indies Women’s team has ended. Cricket West Indies decided to discontinue the contracts of the head coach and assistant coaches, Robert Samuels and Corey Collymore.

CWI says

In a recent development, following a review process, Cricket West Indies decided against renewing the contracts of West Indies Women’s team head coach and assistant coaches. In a statement, released by the CWI, the director Jimmy Adams said, “We are very grateful for the contribution of Courtney and his technical team over the past two and a half years and we wish them all the best going forward.”

He added, “CWI remains committed to our international women’s program and will now be focusing on recruiting a new Head Coach and technical support team. An interim technical support team will be put in place during the recruitment period.”

A forgettable tenure

Courtney Walsh took over from Gus Logie in October 2020 and under his coaching, West Indies women won series against Pakistan both home and away in 2021. Under him, the team also reached the semi-finals of the 2022 50-over World Cup. However , the team only won a total of seven T20Is out of 24 and 11 ODIs out of 32 they played during Walsh’s tenure. In fact, they also failed to qualify to the semi-finals of the 2023 T20 World Cup organized earlier this year. They won just two games against Pakistan and Ireland out of the four they played in the tournament’s group stage and finished behind England and India in Group B.

One of the big developments during Walsh’s tenure that shook the cricket world was the sudden retirement of Deandra Dottin from international cricket. Dotting who had taken to social media to announce the same, mentioned in the post about certain team environment. “There have been many obstacles during my cricket career that I have had to overcome[.] [H]However, the current climate and team environment has been non-conductive to my ability to thrive and reignite my passion.”
