Bumrah’s surgery was successful in New Zealand


Jasprit Bumrah has undergone surgery in New Zealand and reportedly will be resuming training by August end. Bumrah who has been missing from any cricket since late September 2022, is trying to be fit and match ready for the ODI World Cup later this year.

How is Bumrah?

According to Cricbuzz, Bumrah’s operation has been successful and he has been doing fine. He will be in New Zealand till the end of this month. Bumrah could not be part of the white-ball series at home against South Africa follwoing a stress reaction in his lower back. During the home series against Sri Lanka, he tried to make a comeback which eventually did not happen. It was the medical team of the BCCI that suggested surgery.

An official of the hospital where Bumrah’s surgery has been done said to Cricbuzz, “Any questions regarding Jasprit will be best directed to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).” It is believed that the name Dr Rowan Schouten, a noted The orthopedic surgeon attached to the Forte Orthopedics Hospital in Christchurch, New Zealand was suggested to the Indian Cricket Board by Shane Bond, the Mumbai Indians bowling coach. The surgeon treated quite a few sportspersons like Jofra Archer, James Pattinson, and Jeffen Behrendor. , the hospital website says, “is a New Zealand trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in the management of adult spinal conditions and hip replacement surgery.”

Match-fit before World Cup

Bumrah will be missing this year’s Indian Premier League which is a big blow to Mumbai Indians. He will also not be available for the World Test Championship final scheduled to be played in June, in case of India qualify. While there have been multiple attempts made for Bumrah’s comeback, the BCCIthe NCA in Bangalore, and also the Indian team management do not want to take any chance.

In January, Rohit Sharmathe Indian cricket team captain addressed the issue saying, “The back injuries are always critical. We have got lot of cricket coming up after that as well, we will see, and we will monitor. We are in constant touch with doctors and physios at NCA and we are constantly hearing from them.” With India hosting the World Cup, the aim is to make him available ahead of the same.
