Australia spin legend Shane Warne passed away on Friday at the age of 52 of a suspected heart attack. According to media reports, the former Australian cricketer was at a villa in Thailand at the time of his death.
An official statement from Warne’s manager read:
“Shane was found unresponsive in his villa and despite the best efforts of medical staff, he could not be revived. The family requests privacy at this time and will provide further details in due course.”
Ironically, the news of Warne’s death came just hours after he tweeted condolences for another Aussie legend, Rod Marsh, who also died after suffering a heart attack at the age of 74. Warne’s last tweet read, “Sad to hear the news that Rod Marsh has passed. He was a legend of our great game & an inspiration to so many young boys & girls. Rod cared deeply about cricket & gave so much-especially to Australia & England players. Sending lots & lots of love to Ros & the family . RIP mate.”
Warne will be remembered as one of the greatest ever to play the game. He featured in 145 Tests and claimed 708 wickets at an average of 25.41. He also picked up 293 wickets in 194 ODIs and was a key member of the Australian team that lifted the World Cup in 1999. The legend also holds the record for having claimed the most number of wickets in the Ashes – 195
Cricket fraternity shattered as tributes pour in for Shane Warne
Life is so fickle and unpredictable. I cannot process the passing of this great of our sport and also a person I got to know off the field. RIP #goat. Greatest to turn the cricket ball. – Virat Kohli
Numb. The highlight of my cricketing career was to keep wicket to Warnie. Best seat in the house to watch the maestro at work. Have often felt a tad selfish, that Heals and I pretty much exclusively are the only ones who had that thrill and pleasure at Test level. Rip Warnie. – Adam Gilchrist
And speechless at the moment. I literally don’t know how to sum up this situation. My friend is gone!! We have lost one of the Greatest Sportsmen of all time!! My condolences goes out to his family. RIP Warnie!! You will be missed. – Brain Lara
Shocked, stunned & miserable… Will miss you Warnie. There was never a dull moment with you around, on or off the field. Will always treasure our on field duels & off field banter. You always had a special place for India & Indians had a special place for you. Gone too young! – Sachin Tendulkar
