Aakash Chopra thinks Devdutt Padikkal will be the highest run-scorer for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2022

Former India Test cricketer Aakash Chopra has made an eye-catching prediction for Rajasthan Royals (RR) ahead of the IPL 2022. Chopra believes young Indian batter Devdutt Padikkal will emerge as the franchise’s highest run-getter of the forthcoming season.

In an RR batting unit glint with Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler, Shimron Hetmyer and Rassie van der Dussen, the ex batter-turned-commentator thinks India and Karnataka left-hander Padikkal will rise to the top of the runs-chart for the tournament.

Not retained by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Padikkal found his new home with Royals after a bid of INR 7.75 crores by the franchise at the mega auction in Bangalore last month. Padikkal lost the race to retention in RCB camp despite two notable seasons with the bat.

Emerging a solid top-order anchor, Padikkal has collected 884 runs from 29 innings of the IPL since 2020, going at a strike-rate of 125.03. His duo at the top with the great Virat Kohli was instrumental to RCB’s playoffs quest.

For Aakash Chopra, chances are high that Padikkal will continue his rich vein of form in the IPL for RR as well and likely finish off the season as the team’s highest run-scorer.

Chopra also said he sees Padikkal forming a pairing at the top of the order with an equally promising young Indian batter Yashasvi Jaiswal.

“Devdutt Padikkal will be the highest run-scorer for RR this season. I see him opening alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. Although this is an Achilles heel as Buttler will bat down the order but I still feel Padikkal will be the highest run-scorer,” Chopra said on his Youtube channel.

Playing on challenging neutral surfaces in India and UAE, Padikkal made a whopping 411 runs in IPL 2021 at an average of 31.61 and strike-rate of 125.30.

In between two legs of the rescheduled tournament, Padikkal even got the opportunity to make his India debut during the T20I series against Sri Lanka in July.

The cricketer hasn’t played for the country since and will be eyeing a strong comeback through this year’s edition of the IPL, starting March 26.
