Ahead of the Indian Premier League 2024 season, the auction is all set to be held on December 19. It will be the first time when an IPL auction is being held outside India in Dubai. The franchises have already announced their list of released and retained players, vacating a potential amount of space for acquiring talented and capable cricketers. The newly appointed mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders Gautam Gambhir who bid farewell to Delhi Capitals last month, is actually looking for a pacer who can also serve as the role of a backup opener.
KKR is currently bestowed with only three pacers at the moment namely Harshit Rana, Vaibhav Rana and Andrew Russell as they released ace pacers like Shardul Thakur, Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson and Umesh Yadav. In that situation, the franchise is expected to bid for a number of pacers in the upcoming IPL auction. On the other hand, the team’s spinner options look way more sorted out than the fast-bowling unit.
Dilshan Madushanka’s strides
Sri Lanka’s ace pacer Dilshan Madushanka undoubtedly made heads turn with this brilliant performance in the 2023 World Cup. He was mind blowing in the mega tournament, picking up 23 wickets in a total of 9 innings, which made him the 3rd leading wicket-taker. After such a performance, it is likely that franchises might be looking upon him in the upcoming auction. Senior cricketer Aakash Chopra reckons that the pacer may even attract a big sum of money from the franchise who will rope him in.
Chances of Gautam Gambhir considering Madushanka
Aakash Chopra asserted that the newly appointed mentor of KKR, Gautam Gambhir might be having all eyes on Dilshan Madushanka now. Chopra remarked “They have not given themselves too many options. They have two Indian fast bowlers in the form of Harshit Rana and Vaibhav Arora but they won’t be able to do the job alone. Andre Russell’s bowling ability remains a huge doubt in any case.”
While speaking on his YouTube channel, he further stated “I feel they will go shopping for fast bowlers. Very few franchises will be able to outbid them because they have a lot of money. If I know Gautam Gambhir well, his sights will be set on Madushanka. So Madushanka might actually have a field day. He might get sold for six to eight crores.”
