In a heartfelt announcement that touched the hearts of cricket enthusiasts worldwide, the veteran India and Bengal batter, Manoj Tiwary, announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Thursday (August 3). The 37-year-old cricket stalwart took to Instagram to share the emotional news, bidding goodbye to the game that had given him everything and shaped his life in unimaginable ways.
An illustrious career
Tiwary’s journey in the international cricket arena began in 2008 when he made his debut in an ODI in Brisbane. Although he faced an early setback, being dismissed for a duck, his perseverance and talent earned him another chance to represent India after three years. During this stint, he left an indelible mark with his only international century, a magnificent knock against West Indies in Chennai.
The cricketing path wasn’t always smooth for Tiwary, as he faced challenges and ups and downs throughout his career. After being left out of the ODI team in 2012, he continued to feature for his state, Bengal, with unwavering determination. Despite being out of the national reckoning, Tiwary remained a key player for Bengal and recently captained them to the Ranji Trophy final, showcasing his leadership qualities and commitment to the game.
Spectacular numbers in domestic cricket
His first-class career proved to be nothing short of spectacular, leaving a trail of brilliance with 29 centuries at an impressive average of 48.56 and amassing over 9900 runs. Among his numerous memorable innings, his best score of 303*, achieved against Hyderabad in January 2022, stands as a testament to his remarkable skills and talent as a batter.
Tiwary’s contributions extended beyond the domestic circuit, as he made his mark in the glitzy and adrenaline-fueled Indian Premier League (IPL). With 98 IPL appearances, he became a prominent figure in the tournament. In the 2012 final, playing for Kolkata Knight Riders, he etched his name in history by hitting the winning runs against Chennai Super Kings, a moment cherished by fans. Another standout season for Tiwary came in 2017 when he played a crucial role in Rising Pune Supergiant’s journey to the final. Although his IPL appearances dwindled post that season, his impact on the league remained unforgettable.
