Melbourne authorities said on Thursday that Australia’s Boxing Day test against its rival England and next year’s Australian Open will be held before the game is full because they lifted more epidemic restrictions.
Victorian Premier Dan Andrews said that Victoria is about to reach a 90% vaccination rate, which will remove long-standing restrictions, including capacity restrictions for sports events. The Five Test Ashes Series will begin in Brisbane on December 8, then move to Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, and end in Perth.
Andrews’ decision is also good news for tennis fans. The first tennis Grand Slam tournament in 2022 will begin in Melbourne Park on January 17, and the audience will be full by then.
This year’s game was hit hard, the number of people was limited, and it was called a five-day fast lock in the middle of the game. But it remains to be seen whether there will be a large number of tennis stars heading to Melbourne. The authorities warned that unvaccinated players are unlikely to obtain visas, which makes the involvement of defending champion Novak Djokovic seriously questioned.
